Sunday November 3rd 2024 walking tour from 11am-1pm
Meet at Craiglockhart Terrace entrance
Angus Miller, geologist, will lead us on a walk along the Woodland Trail, anti-clockwise from the pond, along the Poets’ path, up the Hilltop path to the summit and down via the zigzag path. He describes the walk as follows:
Explore the geology of Easter Craiglockhart Hill and find out how it fits into the wider landscape. We’ll discover layers of lava formed by volcanic eruptions around 350 million years ago, and as we climb towards the top of the hill we’ll find out what happened to the rest of the volcano! From the top of the hill we will be able to appreciate the wider scenery and discover that this volcano was just one of many that has shaped the City of Edinburgh and the surrounding landscape.
Angus runs regular walks through the popular Geowalks https://geowalks.scot/ and also teaches at the University of Edinburgh and Adult Education for City of Edinburgh Council.
Please note that this walk, in November especially, could be wet and muddy and involves steep paths both up and down. Suitable clothing and footwear are advised. Not suitable for children under 12 years.
