New Era
19th Mar: Two swans landed and proceeded to launch vicious attacks on Brighid. She put up a good fight, but was eventually weakened by the prolonged attacks. A decision was taken to ask the SSPCA to intervene for Brighid’s safety: she was trapped amongst reeds unable to defend herself. The SSPCA attended and safely removed Brighid – she was taken to the vet for a check-up and released onto the river Esk at Musselburgh. She is in a safer place now.
Brighid (tag NUU – metal ring W36942) will be sorely missed by her many admirers. Brighid hatched on the pond in 2012. She and Siegfried later paired up driving off the resident pair Vesta and Leithie. Brighid, first with Siegfried, then Tullius, successfully raised more than 50 cygnets – five last year – they all fledged and flew off to “pastures new”. We anxiously wait to see what happens next on the pond? Will the new pair stay and make it their home? Only time will tell.
