More Pond Drama
There was much to-ing and fro-ing during late autumn. On 4 Jan a cygnet was stuck on the iced-over pond, the other cygnet being fine wandering around on the frozen pond with Dotty Then these two flew off on 5 Jan. The pond was frozen solid from 3 – 12 Jan.
On 8 Jan Lothian Fire & Rescue Service rescued the cygnet that was stuck on icy pond, and it was taken away by SSPCA for assessment at their Alloa Animal Rescue Centre.
This meant that there were NO SWANS on the pond at all! This was possibly the first time this has occurred in several decades. The SSPCA said the cygnet would be released back on the pond after treatment, if it was safe to do so. On 11 Jan the “rescued” cygnet was released back onto pond, but there were no sightings of it afterwards.
13 Jan: Two new swans landed on the pond, a male and female pair, un-ringed and untagged. They have definitely taken over and settled in.
From 30 Jan daily nesting activity started at the East end of pond among the reeds close to the previous nest site.
