CANAL WALK

SATURDAY 2NDJUNE AT 10.00am.

Join Colin Chess, renowned local historian, for a guided walk along the Union Canal. We are ringing the changes from Colin’s popular history walks around the Craiglockhart Hills. Colin is a fount of local knowledge and this walk will be equally fascinating.

Learn about the history of the canal and the barges which brought the raw materials for the factories and industries of Edinburgh. Inspect the impressive aqueducts at Longstone and visit the memorial to the Wellington bomber which crashed beside the canal in WW2. Consider whether the growth in ‘canal tourism’ is a good thing. Along the way, look out for cygnets and ducklings maybe even a kingfisher.

Gather at the old stone bridge at Meggetland on Colinton Road near Tesco Express. The walk is level, covers a distance of about one and a half miles and should take about two hours. No need to book and it’s free (though a small donation is always very welcome)
